Home Remedies to Get Rid of Colorado Springs Moles

The presence of Colorado Springs moles is apparent when you see mounds of rich black dirt in your garden. Moles and gophers are both burrowing animals and leave dirt piles. Moles are carnivores and eat only insect grubs and worms. They are actually beneficial to man. But, they make the place dirty and move roots and plants when they burrow. Gophers are pests and eat plants and destroy crops. A gopher’s mound is crescent shaped and has a dirt plug on them. Moles can be removed by using simple home remedies. Killing is not humane and is better avoided. Some simple remedies are given below.

1. Trapping the mole
Trapping a mole is a good alternative to killing it. Place a glass jar or bucket in the area of mole traffic. To find the area of mole traffic, start at the molehill tunnel working away from it. Dig down under one of the tunnels and place the glass jar. Moles fall into it when they run along the tunnel. The sides being slippery moles cannot climb out. The Colorado mole is them taken and released far away from home. Manual trapping can also be done.

2 Using deterrents
Castor oil causes itching in Colorado Springs moles. A mixture of castor oil with soap and water can be sprayed into the tunnels and yard. The taste of insects changes becoming bitter. Moles do not like this and are forced to seek food (insects) elsewhere. Other deterrents like cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce can also be used. These ingredients can also be combined and used. Moles are also deterred by strong smells. Dryer sheets placed at entry points of tunnels drive them away.

3 Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds are packed with nutrients like nitrogen and potassium. They are super food for the plants. Being acidic they also act as neutralizers in alkaline soils. The great advantage is that moles detest the strong odor. Coffee grounds are a double edged sword. They enrich your garden and keep Colorado moles away.

4 Removing source of food
A garden rich in worms and insects is a paradise for Colorado Springs moles. Using natural repellents to remove insects is a sure way of getting rid of moles.

5 Vibrating devices
Battery powered vibrating sticks are available. They can be introduced into Colorado Springs mole tunnels. Moles are repelled by the noise and vibrations. They try to find new abodes. Moles are very adaptive by nature and get used to anything. So the effect may be temporary and cannot be used frequently.

6 Flooding
Moles can be flushed out by flooding. They can be caught when they come out and relocated.

Preventive measures taken will help secure your garden from further invasions of moles. Two steps to prevent them are
• Cats and owls are predators and having them may deter Colorado moles.
• Plants like daffodils, marigold and chocolate lily may prevent moles.
• An underground barrier which is at least 30” deep and 6” above the surface must be built around the perimeter of your garden.
